This morning, I had the honor of visiting with Chuck Willis of Arlington, TX, the fly fisherman who came up with the idea for what became the Fish Whisperer-Willis Edition lanyard. He recently placed an order for another name-sake lanyard, and I met him at a local coffee shop to personally deliver it to him.

One of the drawbacks of this little hobby of mine, is that I don't get to meet most of my customers. But I do enjoy the notes, emails and other communications from those who live "outside" the boundary of the great State of Texas.

Eric Gass, owner/operator of GS Outfitting in Greenfield, Massachusetts designed this new fly fishing lanyard model (GS Outfitting) which incorporates a removeable vertical tipper holder, which will easily hold 2-4 tippet spools.

This new model can be made with multiple foam fly holders, other bead color, and also with black cord instead of orange.

Eric guides float trips on the Deerfield River in Massachusetts. www.gsoutfitting.com is the website for more info. Eric has some great cold water fly fishing pictures on his site.

Eric is one of several guides and outfitters who have contacted me in the past month to design a special lanyard for them. These special lanyards take a while to develope, and involve several phone calls and photo exchanges, but in the end, the fisherman gets what they want! That is what is most important to me.

New fishing friend, Brenda L. of Miles City, Montana, contacted me about making her a special Fish Whisperer-Willis Edition. So I included two silver butterfly charms, plum colored jewelry beads, along with silver beads with her initials.

Again, this picture does not do it justice. It is a very pretty lanyards.

We made it through Easter . . . and as promised, I am accepting order again. I cleared out all my junk emails, and I believe I have about 23 outstanding orders since the beginning of March.

My senior pastor and ministry partner of 6 years died unexpectedly 3+ weeks ago, and things at the church have been hopping every since . . . all in a good way . . . it is my privilege to be on the pastoral staff of a great church!! Ken was a wonderful pastor, father, friend and community leader. He led us well, because we are actually a stronger church these weeks later.

Of course, I give a lot of the credit to God as well! I can't imagine going through something like this without God and family.

However, I just do not have the time right now to make any lanyards . . . at least through the first week of April. I have a couple outstanding orders that I am going to try and get caught up with soon . . . but I cannot take any new orders right now, and be able to guarantee when they will arrive.

For several years now, I have included a little chrome fish charm on all lanyards. I was informed this past Friday that the charms I have been using have been discontinued by the supplier.

This lanyard seems to be the one that our fishing friends in Colorado prefer. I have a vest, and I carry a lot of stuff when I fish with a vest, especially if I am going to remain quite a ways from my SUV.

But, honestly, I don't think I fish as smart as I do when I only take a lanyard and a small fly box. I believe fishing with a lanyard makes you take a more focused look at the waters you fish, and carry only what you know you will need.

Brent camps out on the beach on these trips, and felt that having stainless steel swivel connectors would be the best way to go, so he provided me with the swivels to use.

My lanyards are all designed to stand up to weather, and to being washed and cleaned after use, which is why I use silver chrome swivels for salt water lanyards. But in Brent's case, camping out on the beach for a week . . . stainless steel was the way to go.

New fly fishing friend Jim G. of Los Angeles, CA placed an order for this modified FW-Willis Edition lanyard, but asked that I replace one of the top swivel connectors with a shirt clip, as he wanted to use it to hold a piece of chamois cloth to be used to clean his glasses, or as a leader straightener.

If you cut your own chamois cloth, you could add a small sewing grommet, and attach with a swivel connector . . . or connect as shown in the picture.

Yes, those are green wooden beads, which Gordon requested. I carry a small supply of green, blue, black and pink beads. The green and blue beads look great with the brown carved beads. The pink looks great with silver beads.

New fishing friend Dave W. of Westminster, Colorado placed an order for a lanyard.

The picture here is the lanyard Dave has ok'd for me to ship, a modification of the Fish Whisperer-Willis Edition with a 7th swivel connector. However, this lanyard may not be finished.

Like most people, Dave caught on before he ordered the lanyard that he would have to try it a while before he got what he carries all in the right places. That is the right attitude to have about fishing with a lanyard . . . it is going to take a few times out on the water to figure everything out.

So, I am sending Dave 2 extra sets of cord and shrink wraps, so he can restring the lanyard if he decides he wants to change the design.

Works for me. It's not my lanyard. It's DAVE'S lanyard, so in the end, it needs to be what Dave wants.

When people ask me for advice, I tell them what I like, and what other people tell me they like. I have never charged for advice, and don't give it unless it is asked for. The ultimate goal . . . is that every fly fisher, be it man or woman, who orders a lanyard . . . will in the end get what THEY want.

Yes, lanyards I make may look like others I have made. And some look different. These are custom lanyards. I don't ship a lanyard unless the customer gives me approval, after I have sent them a digital picture by email. If you aren't satisfied before I ship . . . then I try my best to fix it. And, if you are not satisfied after you receive and use your lanyard . . . then I just ask that you give me a chance to solve the problem.

Here is a picture of a lanyard I am working on for a customer. It started out as a Horn Island Model, but is slowly morphing into something else as far as the design goes. In the picture, I included several items next to features already on the lanyard, that could be changed if the customer so desired.

Turns out . . . he came up with something different . . . and I will post a picture of the finished lanyard when I am done building it.

But most importantly, it will end up being what the customer wants.

I will make suggestions if asked. However, your placing an order for, and receiving the lanyard YOU want is always the most important thing in the entire process. My new friend and fellow Texas Gulf Coast fisherman, Steve W. of Texas, placed an order for this Horn Island lanyard without a tippet holder. It is being mailed out to him today.

The Durafoam floats on this lanyard are tough . . . and can be used for hooking a wet flys into so they can dry a bit before placing them back into a fly box or until they can be rinsed off with fresh water to prevent the hook from corroding.

This lanyard is tough . . . designed to withstand saltwater conditions, and to be rinsed off with fresh water after use.

Wow! In a few days, I will have shipped fly fishing lanyards to 26 of the 50 states in our good old US of A. The lastest additions to my list are Massachusetts and Idaho.

Never in my wildest dreams . . . what a journey this has been.

Making fly fishing lanyards is both a hobby and a ministry for me. A creative diversion, if you will, from the rest of the week when I am a pastor on the staff of a large church. I am a preacher, Bible teacher, pastoral counselor and mediator by calling/training. I am a singer and guitarist because it is my first love. After a while, I knew I needed a unique hobby, one that would help me relax, and slow me down in my off time.

I started making lanyards out of a desire to make one for myself, and for a couple of my colleagues, when we all started to learn how to fly fish. It's just fun, making lanyards and getting to meet by phone, email, or even in person, people who ask, "Hey, will you make a lanyard for me?"

As this is a hobby, and therefore there has to be certain boundaries in placed to keep this a hobby, I can only make about 40-50 lanyards a year. That's why I don't have a big website, or go to fishing shows. A couple of fly shops in Tennessee and Texas have ordered a few lanyards here and there. Mostly, I make and send lanyards to people who stumble across my blog page. In the process, I've meet some really great people, even made a friend or two.

Thank you to everyone who has asked me to create a fly fishing lanyard for them. It has been and continues to be an honor and a privilege.

Fish Whisperer - Willis Edition lanyard with "Southwest" theme

A new fishing friend, John B. of New York, placed an order for this Fish Whisperer - Willis Edition with Southwestern bead arrangement. Not a bad looking lanyard, if I say so myself!

The Fish Whisperer - Willis Edition has been my best seller in the past two months, in black/brown, black/turquoise, and now in this Southwestern color style.

A reminder that the last day I can ship before a needed summer break is Friday, July 2nd. I will resume shipping around July 15th.

I will be closing down for summer vacation soon . . .

FYI . . .

I will be closing down for summer vacation beginning Monday, July 5th. The last day I can ship out orders before that is Friday, July 2nd.

I will resume shipping on or "around" July 15th.

I can accept orders during vacation, and will try to email you back, and then will construct and ship the lanyard after vacation is over.

This ol' body needs a rest. The Texas heat this year is killing me (so-to-speak). Time for a break.

I know of at least 5 orders that are holding, and I am waiting on a return phone call for a 6th lanyard. I should be caught up constructing lanyards, and shipping them all out by early next week.

Black/Brown Fish Whisperer / Willis Edition going to Utah . . .

This is a picture of a Fish Whisperer - Willis Edition (Black/Brown) that I am shipping to Dave S. in Utah.

4 fly holders, to use when you have finished with a fly and need it to dry before putting it away, and 6 connection snaps will handle forceps, line nippers, fly floatant and other items you don't want to be caught out on the water without.

It seems the guys out west like this style lanyard. One day I hope to fly fish in Colorado or Utah. But until then, warm water fly fishing in Texas, with occasional trout fishing in Arkansas and Oklahoma will have to do.
